Relay Comms

Exploring how existing communication infrastructure can be used in new ways.

LCRD is an interactive simulation inspired by NASA's Laser Communications Relay Demonstration. It explores how existing orbital infrastructure could be repurposed as a communication system between locations on Earth.

Communication systems are often treated as fixed infrastructure. Satellites are launched with a specific mission, operate for years, and eventually become part of the background technology that people rarely think about.

LCRD explores a different possibility. Instead of building a new network, it asks what could happen if an existing communications satellite were used for a new purpose.

The simulation visualizes a satellite receiving an optical signal from one location and relaying it to another using directed laser communication. Rather than focusing on the engineering of the spacecraft, it focuses on the communication itself and how information moves through physical infrastructure.

LCRD is an exploration of reuse. It looks at how existing systems can support new capabilities without requiring entirely new infrastructure, and how interactive visualization can make those systems easier to understand.
